[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyung-min] Starting next year, the Prosecutor General's annual salary is expected to exceed 100 million KRW for the first time.

According to the Ministry of Justice on the 20th, Yoon Seok-yeol, the Prosecutor General at the ministerial level, has been receiving a monthly salary of 8,172,800 KRW since January 1 of this year. Calculated based on the pure salary excluding allowances, the annual salary amounts to 98,073,600 KRW.

From next year, Yoon's monthly salary will increase. This is because the government decided to raise public officials' pay by 2.8% this year to improve their treatment. Accordingly, starting January 1 next year, Yoon will receive a monthly salary of 8,431,600 KRW. Based on this, the annual salary will be 101,179,200 KRW, and the total amount will increase further when various allowances are included. Yoon, who was appointed in July last year, will serve until July next year.

The Ministry of Justice announced the draft of the "Enforcement Decree on the Salary of Prosecutors," which includes this information, for public comment on the same day. This is a measure to adjust prosecutors' salaries by reflecting the increase in public officials' pay according to the "Public Officials' Salary Regulations" promulgated and enforced on the 7th of last month. However, for prosecutors at grade 3 or higher and the Prosecutor General, the 2.8% increase will not be applied until December 31 of this year, and the pre-increase salary will be paid according to the previous regulations.

The Ministry of Justice plans to receive opinions on this presidential decree amendment draft until March 2, and then proceed with the procedures such as submission to and resolution by the State Council before enforcement.

Meanwhile, Yoon was confirmed to have the largest assets among senior officials in the Ministry of Justice and prosecution. According to the "Regular Asset Changes of Senior Public Officials" disclosed by the Government Ethics Committee on March 28 last year, when he was serving as the Chief Prosecutor of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office, his total assets amounted to 6,509,770,000 KRW.
