The sharp increase in M&A activity this year is attributed to consecutive acquisitions in the networking and wireless sectors, which are expected to grow rapidly, as well as some large corporations undergoing business restructuring.
Intel agreed to sell its smartphone modem business to Apple for about $1 billion, and prior to that, U.S. company Marvell decided to sell its wireless LAN business to the Dutch company NXP Semiconductors.
