[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] Choi Gyo-il, a member of the Future United Party representing the Yeongju, Mungyeong, and Yecheon districts in Gyeongbuk, has announced that he will not run for re-election.

On the 20th, Choi stated on his Facebook, "I have decided not to run in the 21st National Assembly election."

This follows earlier that morning when Kang Hyo-sang, a proportional representative of the United Party, announced he would forgo running in Daegu Dalseo Byeong and instead run in a challenging district in Seoul, marking the fifth withdrawal announcement from the Daegu-Gyeongbuk (TK) region.

He expressed, "I bow my head in gratitude to the citizens and local residents who have supported me. Throughout my four-year term as a National Assembly member, I have faced many difficulties and challenges, and although I have done my best, I could not stop the ruling party's unilateral dominance and tyranny."

He continued, "I feel a heavy sense of responsibility for not meeting the people's expectations, and I will do my utmost for the Future United Party's victory in the April 15 general election and the change of government. I would like to once again thank the voters who sent me to the National Assembly four years ago and all those who have trusted and supported me."
