[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kang Sharon] The Gyeongnam Office of Education (Superintendent Park Jong-hoon) announced on the 19th that, as the number of confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) increased domestically and many patients occurred in the neighboring Daegu and Gyeongbuk regions, an emergency countermeasure meeting presided over by the superintendent was held at the Changnyeong Office of Education.

At the emergency countermeasure meeting attended by the heads of the four city and county offices of education near the Daegu and Gyeongbuk regions (Miryang, Changnyeong, Geochang, Hapcheon), the head of the 'COVID-19 Prevention Countermeasures Team' was elevated from vice superintendent to superintendent. Measures such as activating the authority to supervise private academies for infectious disease prevention, temporarily closing four public libraries (Changnyeong, Namji, Hapcheon, Geochang), emergency deployment of health personnel, scaling down entrance ceremonies, and self-training for teachers residing in areas with many confirmed cases were decided.

At the emergency countermeasure meeting, focused discussions were held on countermeasures to prevent the spread of COVID-19, including ▲disinfection of schools and private academies and provision of hand sanitizers ▲temperature checks in after-school care classrooms, after-school programs, and kindergartens (public and private) ▲suspension of ongoing new school year staff training ▲additional procurement of disinfection supplies ▲strengthening education on student preventive measures such as hand washing and wearing masks.

Superintendent Park Jong-hoon stated, “We will focus administrative efforts to ensure that infectious diseases do not spread to schools starting the new semester through maintaining a hotline between the Office of Education and schools and close cooperation with local governments and health authorities.”
