Seongnam City Orders Indefinite Closure of 688 Multi-use Facilities Amid COVID-19 Spread Seongnam City Hall

[Asia Economy (Seongnam) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Seongnam City in Gyeonggi Province has decided to indefinitely extend the closure of 688 multi-use facilities in the region as the "Novel Coronavirus Infection" (COVID-19) situation enters a new phase.

On the 19th, Seongnam City announced that, following the occurrence of additional confirmed COVID-19 cases in Daegu on the 18th, and amid localized community transmission, it will take strong measures prioritizing citizens' safety and preventing the spread of community infections.

The targeted facilities include public libraries, Seongnam Sports Complex and other sports facilities, youth centers, senior welfare centers and senior citizen centers, lifelong learning centers, sports centers, Ai Sarang Playground, the city hall's comprehensive PR center, and book cafes.

These facilities had been temporarily closed sequentially since the 3rd but were scheduled to reopen as the situation had entered a lull.

However, due to concerns over the spread of infections within the region, especially with the large number of confirmed cases emerging in Daegu, the city urgently decided to extend the closures indefinitely.

The city will also review whether to additionally close 39 currently operating facilities, including 9 veterans' organizations and 2 comprehensive social welfare centers.

During this period, additional disinfection will be conducted throughout all facilities, and the city will actively provide guidance on postponing reopenings and infection prevention measures.

The city is informing citizens in real time about the COVID-19 infection status through its official website and social media channels.

As of this date, the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in South Korea has risen to 46, with no confirmed cases in the Seongnam area.
