Lee Hyuk-je, Jeonnam Provincial Councilor, Urges Establishment of High Schools in Mokpo Bujudong and Okam-dong Lee Hyuk-je, Jeonnam Provincial Assembly Member

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Chunsu] Lee Hyukje, a member of the Jeonnam Provincial Assembly, announced on the 19th that he urged the establishment of a new high school in the Bujudong and Okamdong areas, the first educational issue in Mokpo, during the 2020 Jeollanam-do Office of Education work report held on the 17th and 18th.

Lee stated, “In the Bujudong and Okamdong areas of Mokpo City, which are part of Namak New Town, there are nearly 5,000 students, and near Imseong-ri Station, an apartment complex housing about 25,000 people is scheduled to be occupied, predicting an educational demand in a densely populated area of about 50,000 people and 10,000 students.”

Assemblyman Lee Hyukje strongly raised the necessity of establishing a new school, saying, “Last year, many students and parents in the Bujudong and Okamdong areas, who have to endure long-distance commuting because they were assigned to schools in the old downtown area, have expressed many complaints about the inconvenience.”

He also said, “In fact, some high schools in Mokpo are concentrated in the old downtown area, raising concerns about voices complaining about the inconvenience caused by long-distance school assignments every year and unnecessary social cost waste,” and urged “the executive branch’s efforts to establish a school, the greatest wish of parents in the Mokpo area, through proactive administration that responds to educational demand.”

In response, Yoon Myung-sik, head of administration at the Jeonnam Office of Education, said, “Due to the continuous decline in the number of students, the Ministry of Education restricts the establishment of new schools, making it difficult, but limited approval is given for new establishment or relocation,” and added, “Active cooperation and consensus from the local community are necessary for this.”
