[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Kim Yeon-ju] Heavy sentences were handed down to a group who lured a woman in her 20s with intellectual disabilities for prostitution mediation, assaulted her to death, and disposed of the body.
On the 19th, the 1st Criminal Division of Gunsan Branch, Jeonju District Court (Chief Judge Hae Deok-jin) announced that A (28) and B (30), who were indicted on charges of murder, joint injury, and corpse disposal, were sentenced to 30 years and 20 years in prison respectively. They were also ordered to wear electronic location tracking devices for 10 years.
Woman C (35), indicted for aiding and abetting murder and corpse disposal, was sentenced to 7 years in prison, while two others including woman D (25), who participated in confinement and corpse disposal, were sentenced to 1 year in prison with 2 years probation.
The court stated the sentencing reasons, saying, "The defendants continued harsh acts knowing that the victim could die, and it appears the victim endured extreme pain and despair over a long period before death. Furthermore, the crime of killing the victim and disposing of the body cannot be tolerated under any circumstances and must be severely punished."
It added, "However, some defendants had minor involvement in the crime and participated under the main perpetrator's threats and coercion, which are considered mitigating circumstances."
They were tried on charges of brutally beating E (20), a woman with intellectual disabilities, with fists and feet in a one-room apartment in Iksan, Jeonbuk, from June to August last year, causing her death, and then burying the body in a mountain in Geochang, Gyeongnam.
Gathered in the one-room apartment for the purpose of prostitution mediation, they reportedly proposed conditional meetings to the victim E, whom they met through social networking services (SNS), and began cohabitation.
The victim was acquainted with A and others through "Facebook friend requests," and it was confirmed that A and others brought the victim from Daegu to the one-room apartment in Iksan in June last year.
Investigations revealed that the victim came to Iksan after being lured by A's promise that she could earn money through conditional meetings.
A and his group picked on the victim with intellectual disabilities for not listening and not cleaning properly, locked her in the laundry room for revealing their identities to clients, and assaulted her indiscriminately without providing food.
Ultimately, E is reported to have died on August 18 after enduring prolonged confinement and assault.
On the same day, they disposed of the body in a mountain in Geochang County, Gyeongnam, about 130 km away from the one-room apartment.
Their crime was uncovered when a woman who had been confined with E escaped the one-room apartment and informed a friend.
