Jang Byung-wan Presents Nam-gu Artificial Intelligence Education Special Zone Project

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] Assemblyman Jang Byeong-wan (Gwangju Metropolitan City Dongnam-gap) has introduced the ‘Nam-gu Artificial Intelligence Education Special Zone Project’.

On the 19th, Assemblyman Jang Byeong-wan stated, “We will attract AI convergence education-focused high schools promoted by the government to make ‘Nam-gu an Artificial Intelligence Education Special Zone,’” and added, “We will promote the mandatory use of AI in various subjects across elementary, middle, and high schools to be prioritized and expanded in the education special zone of Nam-gu.”

In fact, the government plans to introduce educational curricula that cultivate artificial intelligence (AI) literacy in elementary, middle, and high schools in line with the AI National Strategy announced in December last year.

The education will shift beyond providing personalized learning services through AI technology to enabling students to understand and directly apply AI.

First, the Ministry of Education will select 34 ‘AI Education Focused High Schools’ and develop approved textbooks to introduce AI education in high schools this year.

Until the 2022 curriculum revision, the plan is to expand class hours for AI fundamentals such as software (SW) coding and data science, mainly through extracurricular activities.

Assemblyman Jang Byeong-wan promised, “Nam-gu earned the nickname ‘Education Special Zone Nam-gu’ by leading continuous improvements in educational facilities and the safety environment around schools,” and added, “In the era of the 4th Industrial Revolution, we will prepare for the AI era first in Nam-gu through the ‘AI Education UP Project,’ which is a core technology.”
