[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] "Today, I received the Galaxy Z Flip, opened the box, removed the protective film, and then folded the phone, but it cracked. Is it because of the cold weather?"

Controversy over the display durability of the Galaxy Z Flip and Motorola Razr foldable phones is heating up. Cracks have appeared on the Galaxy Z Flip screen, and the Razr phone has experienced screen lifting issues, with 'cold weather' being analyzed as a common cause.

On the 18th (local time), Mr. Amir, who purchased a Galaxy Z Flip, posted a photo on Twitter showing a crack on his device's display. The crack is clearly visible in the middle of the Galaxy Z Flip screen in the photo. Samsung Electronics has recalled the product and started investigating the issue.

There was also a report that the display of Motorola's foldable phone Razr peeled off just one week after use. The internal foldable display screen lifted like a peeling coating paper, causing the LCD screen to become uneven.

Raymond from the UK IT media Input Magazine said, "A large horizontal bubble appeared, and the upper display panel began to separate," adding, "The top layer twisted between the hinges, and the lifted area widened as it was closed, making it scary to fold the phone."

The exact cause of the problems in both products has not yet been revealed. However, speculation arose that the displays might have been damaged as the mercury in New York dropped below freezing over the weekend. Nine to Five Google pointed out, "Both users cited cold weather as a potential cause," adding, "Both cases could be accidental, but buyers still find it hard to be confident."

The Galaxy Fold also had a precedent of delaying its release schedule after a defect was found where the display was damaged when the protective film provided for review before the official launch was removed. Through such trial and error, Samsung Electronics replaced the Galaxy Z Flip's display material from plastic polyimide to 'Ultra Thin Glass,' and some evaluations say the screen's durability has improved compared to its predecessor.

Jack Nelson, who runs the YouTube channel 'JerryRigEverything,' conducted durability tests by scratching the product with a Mohs hardness tester and bending it backward. He scratched the screen with a sharp hardness tester, applied a lighter to the screen, and even made holes in it. Although scratches and burn marks remained on the display, it was not completely damaged. Foreign media also questioned whether the 'Ultra Thin Glass' is truly glass.

The Galaxy Z Flip's display has a protective layer over the Ultra Thin Glass. It is known that an additional shock-absorbing layer was added between the display panel and the Ultra Thin Glass.

IT specialist media SamMobile explained, "The Galaxy Z Flip has an added shock-absorbing layer between the Ultra Thin Glass and the display. This can suppress defects such as cracks or bubbles," adding, "Its durability is much better than the Galaxy Fold. However, one should not expect durability at the level of Gorilla Glass."
