No Signs of Recovery in Employment and Economic Indicators
Calls to Government Ahead of April 4 Deadline
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Son Tae-seok] The Tongyeong City Council in Gyeongnam adopted a resolution urging the government and related agencies to extend the designation of Tongyeong City as an employment crisis area.
The "Resolution to Urge the Extension of the Designation of Tongyeong Area as an Employment Crisis Area for Revitalizing the Local Economy," passed at a meeting of the Tongyeong City Council on the 17th, came ahead of the expiration of the employment crisis area designation period on April 4.
Tongyeong City has so far focused on improving employment conditions and revitalizing the local economy, but various employment and economic indicators show no signs of recovery.
Tongyeong City Council adopted a resolution at a meeting on the 17th urging the government and related agencies to extend the designation of Tongyeong City as an employment crisis area.
Last year, Tongyeong's fisheries industry suffered from mass deaths of farmed fish due to red tides, mass deaths of sea squirts caused by high water temperatures, sluggish domestic consumption, and stagnation due to the Japan-Korea trade dispute.
In addition, the tourism industry faced a crisis with a decrease of over one million tourists, and real estate sales, including housing, sharply declined.
Kang Hye-won, Chairperson of the Tongyeong City Council, said, "We urge the government and related agencies to extend the designation period of the employment crisis area, which ends on April 4, by one year so that Tongyeong City can surely have an opportunity for a new leap forward."
