Lee Jae-myung "We Must Absolutely Prevent the Discharge of Contaminated Water from Japanese Nuclear Power Plants"

[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Lee Jae-myung, Governor of Gyeonggi Province, expressed his stance that Japan's discharge of nuclear power plant contaminated water must be stopped.

On the 18th, Lee posted on his Facebook under the title '#Japan's Nuclear Power Plant Contaminated Water Discharge.. Must Be Stopped' saying, "The Japanese government has decided to discharge 1.2 million tons of contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant into the sea," and lamented, "I cannot believe this conclusion was made by a country that respects international law and can make reasonable judgments."

He continued, "The contaminated water that the Japanese government plans to discharge reportedly still contains some radioactive substances such as cesium-137 and strontium, which are fatal to the human body, and have not been completely removed," adding, "The Japanese government claims that diluting the contaminated water to meet discharge standards is sufficient, but no neighboring country will be reassured by such claims."

Lee stated, "If this contaminated water is discharged, not only our country, which is a neighboring nation, but also Pacific coastal countries affected by ocean currents, and people around the world who consume seafood caught in those waters could suffer damage," warning, "Since Gyeonggi Province, which borders the sea, is obviously a victim, we must not allow a great disaster, unlike anything experienced before, to unfold due to Japan's discharge of nuclear power plant contaminated water."

He emphasized, "The Japanese government must immediately withdraw its decision to discharge nuclear power plant contaminated water, which will commit an irreversible crime against humanity," and stressed, "Abnormal, unreasonable, and irrational acts will surely face appropriate judgment."
