[Asia Economy Reporter Naju-seok] The novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) has claimed the life of the director of a large hospital in Wuhan, China.

Neurosurgeon Director Liu treated patients while serving as the hospital director.

Some media outlets reported that Director Liu died the previous night. Although Liu's wife denied these reports, he ultimately could not survive another day.

Wuchang Hospital, established in 2014, is a tertiary general hospital with a total of 966 employees. The hospital had been fighting fiercely since the early outbreak of COVID-19.

Earlier, China was shocked by the death of Dr. Li Wenliang, the Chinese doctor who first alerted the public about the COVID-19 outbreak.

Chinese economic media Caixin pointed out that the actual number of infected medical staff is nearly twice as high as the official Chinese government announcements. According to a report from the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 3,019 medical personnel in China were infected with COVID-19, of whom 1,688 were in serious condition. In contrast, the National Health Commission (NHC) had announced that about 1,700 medical staff were infected.

The Chinese CDC reported that among the 1,688 critically ill patients, 64% worked in Wuhan, and 23.3% worked in Hebei Province outside of Wuhan.

The report also revealed that 49% of the critically ill patients had died.
