[Asia Economy Reporter Seulgina Cho] Sharp Japan officially announced its first 5G flagship smartphone, the 'AQUOS R 5G'.

According to local media such as ANN and SankeiBiz on the 18th, Sharp stated at an event held in Tokyo the previous day that it plans to release the AQUOS R 5G this spring, when 5G services will be fully launched in Japan.

The AQUOS R 5G features significantly enhanced camera functions based on 5G technology, which allows downloading large data such as movies in just a few seconds. It is equipped with a 6.5-inch Quad HD+ display, Snapdragon 865 processor, and 12GB LPDDR5 RAM.

Additionally, it is the first in the AQUOS series to support 8K high-resolution photo shooting. It includes a 12.2-megapixel (standard), 48-megapixel (ultra-wide), and 12.2-megapixel (telephoto) camera. It also features a focus playback function that automatically recognizes people, pets, and more in videos through its self-developed artificial intelligence (AI), allowing for zoomed playback. The Rich Color technology, adapted from high-definition LCD TV technology, realizes 1 billion colors on mobile. It can also automatically adjust white balance according to surrounding brightness and color temperature.

The device price has not been disclosed, but it is expected to be around 100,000 yen in Japan. SankeiBiz reported, "Amid intensifying competition among smartphone manufacturers, Sharp aims to quickly release the product to satisfy demand for high performance."

At the event, Sharp also revealed plans to release the entire AQUOS series based on 5G by 2021. A company official stated, "With the full-scale launch of 5G, user experience will dramatically change," outlining their response strategy.
