"Enhancing Traffic Safety for Children and Vulnerable Pedestrians Using Advanced Technology" ... Installation Completed at Four Sites Including Guil Elementary ... Pilot Project for 'Smart Right-Turn Alert' to Prevent Accidents When Vehicles Enter Crosswalks on Right Turns
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Guro-gu (Mayor Lee Seong) has established a ‘Smart Intersection Alert’ system in front of elementary schools in the area.
Guro-gu announced on the 18th that it recently completed the installation of the ‘Smart Intersection Alert’ facility using advanced technology to ensure the traffic safety of vulnerable pedestrians such as children.
The ‘Smart Intersection Alert’ is a device that prevents traffic accidents in areas lacking traffic safety facilities, such as crosswalks without traffic lights and side streets.
It informs pedestrians of approaching vehicles through LED signs and voice alerts, and displays real-time driving speeds on alert panels for drivers to encourage steady driving. Through visual and auditory effects, it helps pedestrians recognize dangerous situations and alerts drivers to pay attention.
When there is no vehicle traffic, messages aimed at improving traffic safety awareness are broadcast.
The installation sites include four locations: Guil Elementary School, Oryu Nam Elementary School, Dongguro Elementary School, and Deokui Elementary School. Previously, in 2018, the ‘Smart Intersection Alert’ was pilot-installed near Gocheok Middle School and Guil Middle School. This year, the system will be expanded to six more locations around schools in the area.
Guro-gu is also promoting a pilot project for the ‘Smart Right Turn Alert.’ This device prevents accidents caused by vehicles turning right at crosswalks by using detection cameras to identify the approach of vehicles and pedestrians and notify them accordingly.
Drivers receive the message ‘Caution: Pedestrians on the Right,’ while pedestrians see ‘Caution: Vehicles on the Left’ displayed on alert panels. The installation was recently completed at the three-way intersection near 7, Gyeongin-ro 59-gil, a location with heavy vehicle traffic entering apartment complexes from the main road.
Various vehicle traffic-related information collected through the ‘Smart Intersection and Right Turn Alert’ system is transmitted to the ‘Guro IoT Management System’ for integrated management. The accumulated data will be used as material for future traffic policy formulation.
A Guro-gu official stated, “Since accidents can occur from a momentary lapse in attention, it is important to prepare thorough countermeasures,” and added, “We will do our best to create a safe walking environment free from traffic accident concerns.”
