First Joint Chairpersons of the Inaugural Union: Lee Chang-wan and Kim Jeong-ran System
[Asia Economy Reporter Ki-min Lee] The Samsung Display Labor Union officially launched on the 17th by submitting its union establishment report.
According to industry and labor sources, the Samsung Display union submitted the union establishment report to Asan City Hall, Chungcheongnam-do, on the same day. Asan is where Samsung Display's LCD and OLED panel production plants are located.
Under the current Labor Union and Labor Relations Adjustment Act, the establishment of a union is based on a notification system. For federations, related documents must be submitted to the Minister of Employment and Labor, and for individual unions, to the local government where the workplace is located. Approval takes about 2 to 3 days, but legal effect applies from the day the notification certificate is received.
The Samsung Display union will operate under the inaugural co-chairpersons Kim Jeong-ran and Lee Chang-wan. It is known that Chairperson Kim is in charge of the large business division, while Chairperson Lee is responsible for the small and medium business division.
On the day, Chairperson Kim posted a message titled "A Letter to the Colleagues in the Plaza" on the Samsung Display Labor Union's Naver Band, expressing her thoughts on the union's launch: "I sincerely hope that Samsung Display becomes a healthy company where employees can freely raise concerns without fear of unfairness and can openly communicate about the union."
Chairperson Lee also stated, "We are not an organization created to oppose the company's interests," adding, "If all colleagues can work in an environment where they hum happily, that benefit will fully translate into the company's profit."
He further added, "I am confident that when we unite our voices, assert our rightful rights, and protect ourselves, the company and we will coexist and grow to the next level."
The Samsung Display union is expected to affiliate with the Korean Metal Workers' Union Federation under the Federation of Korean Trade Unions (FKTU). The FKTU plans to provide labor, legal, and publicity support to the Samsung Display union. The Samsung Display union is also expected to hold a press conference at the FKTU soon.
