[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] Gwangju Metropolitan City announced on the 17th that Mayor Lee Yong-seop and Director Cho Hyun-sook of the National Security Technology Research Institute attended and signed a business agreement at the National Security Technology Research Institute in Daejeon to establish a Gwangju regional office and create a Gwangju-type artificial intelligence business foundation.

Through this business agreement, Gwangju City and the National Security Technology Research Institute agreed to jointly develop AI-based security technologies, build research infrastructure, support the commercialization and business development of AI-applied security products, and work together to establish a successful AI industry ecosystem in Gwangju.

The main contents of the agreement include ▲ establishing a Gwangju regional office and creating a Gwangju-type AI-based cybersecurity research environment ▲ joint research and technology development in AI-based cybersecurity ▲ specialized cybersecurity education and workforce training ▲ supporting companies through building a foundation for commercialization and business development of AI-based security products.

The National Security Technology Research Institute, affiliated with the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI), was established in 2000 for research and development and technical support in the field of national security technology. Based on many years of experience in national cybersecurity technology R&D, it has agreed to cooperate in building research infrastructure to foster the AI industry in Gwangju.

With this agreement, Gwangju City will establish a cooperative system with specialized R&D institutions in the cybersecurity field, expanding the scope of Gwangju’s AI industry to include security, and minimizing potential side effects that AI lifestyle popularization may bring. It is expected to have a positive impact on various AI technology development projects that Gwangju will pursue in the future.

Mayor Lee Yong-seop said, “Security is a core element to lead the hyper-connected era centered on AI based on 5G, big data, and the Internet of Things,” adding, “By establishing a cooperative system with research-centered cybersecurity specialized institutions, the completeness of Gwangju as an AI-centered city is enhanced, securing the driving force for promotion, thus fulfilling the sufficient conditions for an AI-centered city.”

He continued, “We will do our best to foster the security industry to resolve the side effects of the AI industry and differentiate ourselves from other AI cities.”
