[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Kyung-pil] Wando County (Governor Shin Woo-cheol) announced on the 17th that it will invest 19 billion KRW in local transfer project funds to promote the ‘Gogeum Historical Space Tourism Resource Revitalization Project’ over four years from 2020 to 2023 in the Deokdong-ri area of Gogeum-myeon.

This project aims to develop the Deokdong-ri area of Gogeumdo Island, a historic site where Admiral Yi Sun-sin established the Samdosugun Control Office during the 1598 Jeongyujaeran (Japanese invasions), and where General Jin Lin led the Ming naval forces and allied troops to victory, into an educational experience space by combining it with a tourism theme and to build a tourism belt linked to the marine healing industry.

To promote this project, the county conducted two rounds of archaeological excavations in the Deokdong-ri area from 2009 to 2010 and completed the basic plan last year.

Subsequently, the project was approved in the Jeollanam-do investment review, and 550 million KRW was secured in 2020 to promote the project. Basic and detailed design services were carried out, and the plan is to proceed without delay until 2023.

The Gogeum Historical Space Tourism Resource Revitalization Project is promoted through four main components: historical tourism resource development, fishing village experience resource development, historical park road construction, and infrastructure facility establishment.

Accordingly, the Samdosugun Control Office will be reconstructed, and beacon mounds will be restored. A mudflat ecological experience center will be established to provide visitors with experiential activities.

In addition, a historical space road, Harmony Plaza, Coastal Road Plaza, information center, accommodation facilities, and parking lots will be developed.

A Wando County official said, “We will ensure the smooth promotion of the Gogeum Historical Space Tourism Resource Revitalization Project to develop it into Wando’s representative historical and cultural tourism resource by linking it with Chungmusa Shrine, Jangbogo Cheonghaejin Historic Site, and Garipojin, contributing to tourism and regional revitalization.”
