[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Ji-hee] SsangYong Motor announced on the 17th that the Rexton Sports became the first sports brand to surpass 40,000 units in domestic sales for two consecutive years.
The Rexton Sports (including the Khan) sold 41,717 units in 2018, followed by 41,328 units last year. Launched in January 2018, the Rexton Sports led SsangYong's domestic sales performance by exceeding 2,500 pre-orders within four days and surpassing 20,000 domestic sales within six months of its release.
In January last year, SsangYong expanded its lineup by launching the long-body model Rexton Sports Khan, which improved loading capacity.
Aiming to be the "only open-type sports utility vehicle (SUV) in Korea," the Rexton Sports shares the interior and convenience features of the flagship SUV G4 Rexton while being recognized as a cost-effective model. It has also received positive reviews for features such as a maximum payload of 700 kg and the application of a locking differential gear (LD) that enhances driving and towing capabilities.
Last month, it was named "Pickup of the Year 2020" by the UK four-wheel-drive specialist magazine '4X4' and was selected as the "Best Pickup (under ?28,000)" in the Car of the Year awards announced by the automotive magazine 'What Car'.
Additionally, SsangYong participated in the 2020 Vienna Auto Show and the Brussels Motor Show in Belgium last month, striving to enhance brand awareness and expand sales in the global market.
A SsangYong Motor official said, "The Rexton Sports is a model that embodies the tradition of the sports brand, which pioneered the unique market of 'open-type SUVs' starting with the Musso Sports in 2002, along with the premium value of Rexton," adding, "We will infinitely grow the value of the sports brand through continuous product innovation and global marketing activities."
