[Asia Economy Reporter Cha Min-young] GS The Fresh (formerly GS Supermarket) announced on the 17th that it will hold a 'Tomato Festival.'
GS The Fresh, a supermarket operated by GS Retail, will hold the Tomato Festival nationwide for one week starting from the 19th of this month.
Unlike the usual tomato events held from March, GS Retail's MD division planned this event from last year through pre-contract cultivation to provide tomatoes, known as a superfood, to customers as early as possible.
Additionally, through direct transactions and contract cultivation with producers (groups), tomatoes are supplied at prices lower than the recent market price. Due to a shortage in the supply of fully ripe tomatoes recently, prices have remained about 30% higher than the average price in February last year and 20% higher than the usual level.
During the festival, fully ripe tomatoes (1kg per bag) can be purchased in a 1+1 event for 5,900 won. Also, cherry tomatoes (1kg per box) and Daljjak-i tomatoes (550g per pack) are sold at 5,900 won each.
Furthermore, GS25 convenience stores are preparing an additional tomato event in early March.
Son Hyung-joo, MD of the fruit team at GS Retail, said, “We prepared this event together with local farmers since last year to be the first in Korea to hold a festival for tomatoes, which are known to help strengthen immunity. We hope all customers will enjoy healthy tomatoes at affordable prices and gain strength.”
