[Asia Economy Reporter Ki-min Lee] LG Display's automotive P-OLED panel has received the 'Eye Comfort Display' certification from a global technology evaluation organization.
LG Display announced on the 17th that its automotive P-OLED panel has become the first in the industry to obtain the Eye Comfort Display certification from TUV Rheinland, a global technology evaluation organization, for automotive panels.
P-OLED is a panel that uses plastic material as a substrate instead of glass, maintaining the excellent image quality of OLED while offering high design flexibility, such as being able to curve according to the driver's line of sight.
Recently, core information display devices in vehicles, such as analog instrument panels, are being replaced by displays. This helps provide comfortable driving under strong sunlight or nighttime driving conditions and allows proactive response to various image quality requirements from different automakers.
The certification test was conducted in three categories: ▲light reflectance ▲blue light emission ▲image quality. LG Display explained that in the light reflectance test, which measures glare caused by external light such as sunlight, the P-OLED recorded a maximum reflectance of 0.22%, reducing it by more than 70% compared to the standard of 1%. Additionally, the blue light emission, which causes eye fatigue during nighttime driving, was about 23%, below the standard of 50%. This is approximately one-third of the blue light emission level of automotive LCDs. Furthermore, in the image quality test, the panel met all standards in areas such as color reproduction, contrast ratio, and brightness.
Jung-sik Shin, Executive Vice President of LG Display's Auto Business Division, said, “This certification acquisition means that P-OLED has been internationally recognized as the optimal automotive display,” adding, “We will solidify our position as a leading company in automotive displays with P-OLED.”
Holger Kunz, Head of Product Certification at TUV Rheinland, stated, “We expect LG Display's P-OLED to lead a new trend as an automotive display.”
Meanwhile, LG Display began mass production of automotive P-OLED at its Gumi plant earlier this year. According to the global market research firm IHS Markit, shipments of automotive OLED panels are expected to grow sharply at an average annual rate of over 80%, from 110,000 units this year to 4.6 million units by 2026.
