[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Yuseonghun, the mayor of Geumcheon-gu, visited Hyundai Market, a traditional market in Geumcheon-gu, on the 14th and held a lunch meeting with merchant members to listen to their difficulties.
The lunch meeting was organized to restore consumer sentiment, which had been weakened due to the COVID-19 outbreak, and to revitalize the traditional market.
At the meeting, merchants expressed their difficulties, saying, "The number of visitors has sharply decreased due to the COVID-19 situation, and many merchants are worried about this month's rent." They also showed their determination to overcome the crisis by saying, "The merchants' association is actively responding to COVID-19 prevention by quickly disinfecting on its own and distributing masks, so we believe we can overcome this soon."
Mayor Yuseonghun said, "Although the traditional market is facing many difficulties, I support the merchants' positive attitude and proactive response," and added, "The district office will review all possible support measures and provide maximum assistance."
After the lunch meeting with the merchants, Mayor Yuseonghun visited market stores to hear their difficulties directly and disinfected various parts of the market together with the district office's quarantine team staff.
The district plans to provide quarantine supplies such as disinfectants, hand sanitizers, and masks to about 1,100 stores within the traditional market and shopping districts until the situation is resolved to create a safe traditional market and shopping area.
To revive the traditional market, which has been struggling due to the spread of COVID-19, the district encourages all departments to promote the use of traditional markets by dining at restaurants within the traditional market, shopping at the traditional market, using Onnuri gift certificates, and promoting the use of traditional markets.
Mayor Yuseonghun said, "We will mobilize all the capabilities of the district to provide practical help to local self-employed and small business owners who are directly hit by COVID-19," and added, "We ask all residents to actively participate in saving the traditional market by shopping and dining there."
