Absolut Achieves Carbon Neutrality by Minimizing Carbon Emissions
Jameson Produces 80% of Whiskey Bottles from Recycled Glass
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Seon-ae] Pernod Ricard Group is leading eco-friendly on-site management to create a sustainable future by practicing energy saving and resource circulation activities from the product manufacturing stage. Through its production facilities, distilleries, the group is making every effort to become an eco-friendly company by recycling waste, reducing electricity usage, and using renewable energy in various ways.
According to Pernod Ricard Group on the 14th, Chivas Brothers, a whiskey manufacturer producing "Ballantine's," "Royal Salute," and "Chivas Regal," has continuously engaged in valuable corporate activities that convert waste into energy through active energy-saving practices at all distilleries. As of 2016, approximately 420,000 tons of waste were converted into gas and energy, achieving a 100% food waste recycling rate at all 32 distilleries in the UK.
The group is also leading the establishment of energy-saving systems. By installing heat compression devices within the stills, steam demand has been reduced by up to 40%. LED lighting and motion detection equipment have been installed, saving an impressive 1,000 kWh of electricity annually. This represents an energy efficiency approximately 26% higher than the industry average.
The vodka brand "Absolut Vodka" produces its iconic clear bottles using over 40% recycled glass. It practices sustainable eco-friendly management by using renewable energy for 85% of the energy consumed in distillation and bottling, thereby reducing electricity usage.
Carbon dioxide generated during the fermentation process is collected and provided for use in producing vegetables and seaweed. High-protein byproducts remaining after wheat fermentation are recycled as feed for pigs and cattle. Through these efforts, less than 1% of waste is sent to landfill. Trees have been planted to absorb the generated carbon dioxide, achieving carbon neutrality.
Jameson, Ireland’s representative whiskey brand, has succeeded in reducing energy and water consumption per unit of production at the Midleton Distillery by up to 28% since 2012 through bold investments and innovations. It distills using only 100% certified local grains, and byproducts remaining after whiskey production are recycled as animal feed. Additionally, 80% of Jameson whiskey glass bottles are made from recycled glass.
Pernod Ricard Group officially announced its intention to participate in the "RE100 campaign" last December. "RE100" is a voluntary global renewable energy campaign in which companies commit to using 100% renewable electricity, organized through a collaboration between the international nonprofit environmental organization The Climate Group and the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP). Currently, 221 global companies are participating. In line with this group strategy, Pernod Ricard Korea and branches worldwide are conducting multifaceted activities for sustainable growth.
