Mokpo City Designated 2020 Mokpo Port Festival as a 'Preliminary Cultural Tourism Festival'

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Jeong Hyeong-seok] Mokpo City announced on the 14th that the Mokpo Port Festival has been finally designated as a ‘2020-2021 Preliminary Cultural Tourism Festival’ selected by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.


The Preliminary Cultural Tourism Festival is designated every two years through a strict evaluation by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to strengthen the self-sustainability and sustainability of local festivals with development potential. A total of 33 festivals nationwide, including the Mokpo Port Festival, were selected.


The Mokpo Port Festival received high evaluations for its programs that reflect the unique characteristics of the port, flavors, and the identity of the modern historical and cultural city, such as ‘Exciting Pasi Madang,’ which recreates the old Mokpo Port through the past fish market on the sea called Pasi, ‘Mokpo 9-mi Battle,’ where you can taste the delicacies of the city of taste, Mokpo, and ‘Love of a Thousand Years,’ a coastal bountiful parade created by citizens based on the legend of Samhakdo.


In particular, despite the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism’s stricter improvement of the designation method from the existing 57 cultural tourism fostering festivals to 33 preliminary cultural tourism festivals, the designation was made, reaffirming the development potential of the unique contents that well blend the special concept of being the only port festival in Korea and Mokpo’s culture.


For the next two years, the Mokpo Port Festival will receive systematic support from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, including expert on-site evaluations, big data analysis, and consulting, and it was also selected as a representative festival of Jeollanam-do, enabling it to receive 20 million KRW in provincial subsidies.


Mokpo City plans to focus its administrative power to further develop the Mokpo Port Festival into a representative cultural tourism festival of Korea and to leap forward as a global tourist city.


Meanwhile, this year’s Mokpo Port Festival is scheduled to be held from October 8 to 11 at Mokpo Port and the Samhakdo area.
