[Asia Economy Reporter Jonggil Lee] Josef Pilsmeyer, the director of the film 'Stalingrad (1993)', passed away peacefully at the age of 81 on the 12th (local time). According to German media, Director Pilsmeyer died peacefully in Zachek, Bavaria.
Director Pilsmeyer was born in 1939 in Munich, Germany. He gained field experience in the camera technology department at the Arnold Institute and founded the production company Perason Film in 1988. Starting with 'Anna's Winter (1988)', he directed 'Stalingrad', 'Twins Are Fun (1993)', 'Brother of Sleep (1995)', and 'The Mountain of Fate Nanga Parbat (2010)'. Especially, 'Stalingrad', which depicted the horrors of the Battle of Stalingrad during World War II, vividly portrayed the tragedy experienced by a German army lieutenant deployed to the front line and received critical acclaim. It won the Best Film Award at the Moscow Film Festival, as well as the German Film Award and the Golden Guild Award.
Director Pilsmeyer was also famous as a pianist who majored in piano at the Munich University of Music. He demonstrated outstanding talent in various fields, simultaneously handling cinematography, art, and production on film sets.
