Professor Kim Beom-gwan of Ulsan University Develops Ulsan's First Timber Frame House

House Openings and Seminar Held on the 14th and 15th

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Yoseop] Professor Kim Beom-gwan (39) of the Department of Architecture at Ulsan University has developed the first timber frame house in the Ulsan area and will hold a seminar along with the house opening.

According to Ulsan University on the 12th, the seminar will be held three times on the 14th at 7 p.m., and on the 15th at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. around Gusu-ri, Eonyang-eup, Ulju-gun, under the theme "Wood, Garden, House." Timber framing refers to columns and other structures reinforced by inserting iron into the wood.

At this seminar, Professor Kim will also reveal research materials on timber frame architecture he has studied over the past two years, along with architectural structural models, drawings, photos, and videos.

Professor Kim has undergone timber framing technology training and continued research activities in Miyazaki Prefecture, the center of forestry and the largest producer of cedar trees. He applied Japanese timber framing technology to traditional Korean hanok eaves and verandas and reinterpreted them in a modern way.

In this process, students majoring in Interior Space Design at the Department of Architecture at Ulsan University, where he works, also participated to attempt learning in design and construction.

Professor Kim stated, "This house, which applies Japanese timber framing technology, secures diversity by breaking away from uniform forms, thereby expanding housing choices," and added, "It also has value as educational material for students who will work as future architectural designers."
