Future Technology Selected by AI: 'Coexistence of Humans and Nature'


[Asia Economy Reporter Junho Hwang] An analysis of 16 million academic papers over the past 12 years using big data by artificial intelligence identified 'environment' as the technology sector expected to show the most remarkable development within the next seven years.


Technologies that protect the environment while enhancing human prosperity, such as energy technologies including hydrogen energy, carbon dioxide resource utilization, autonomous driving, and biodiversity research, are expected to advance.

The Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information (KISTI) Future Technology Analysis Center and Myongji University Data Science Laboratory (Professor Dohyun Kim) selected promising future technologies expected to grow until the mid-2020s through a jointly developed future prediction model. This model is based on big data that compiles key information to gauge the future of technology and incorporates deep learning technology.


Promising technologies include energy technologies that reduce fossil fuel use and protect the environment, as well as AI technologies that make human life more convenient.


First, renewable energy storage and conversion technology for hydrogen energy utilization was selected. This technology produces hydrogen by electrolyzing water using renewable energy and applies it to fuel cells. Also highlighted were next-generation eco-friendly heating and cooling system core material technology, which develops stable nano-adsorbents for adsorption-type heating and cooling systems that serve as alternatives to electric air conditioners, and carbon dioxide resource utilization technology, which captures carbon dioxide and converts it into useful resources such as biofuels, chemical products, and building materials.


Technologies utilizing AI are also expected to show significant growth. These include vehicle control technology for advanced autonomous driving, AI-based machine vision technology that recognizes images and makes automatic judgments, humanoid robot technology for creating human-like robots, and hyperspectral imaging technology that acquires finely segmented spectral information per image pixel to facilitate identification and discovery of specific targets or substances.


Additionally, ultra-high-performance concrete technology, biodiversity research, and high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission technology were selected as promising technologies.

The research team stated that the prediction accuracy of the future prediction model that selected promising technologies is approximately 86.7%.


Junyong Lee, a senior researcher at KISTI, said, "This study is significant in that it developed a prediction model with a high level of accuracy through deep learning technology. Going forward, we plan to establish a virtuous cycle structure that combines data-driven prediction results like this study with experts' insights."
