Gwanak-gu Begins Dorimcheon Stream Restoration Construction from Seoul National University Main Gate to Dongbang 1-gyo Bridge

[Asia Economy Reporter Jong-il Park] Gwanak-gu (Mayor Park Jun-hee) has completed the basic and detailed designs to restore the unrecovered section of Dorimcheon Stream in front of the main gate of Seoul National University into an ecological stream and will begin the full-scale stream restoration project starting in February.

During the 7th elected term, Gwanak-gu has focused on removing the concrete structures of the stream, which were partially covered by roads due to past covering projects, to restore it into a living natural stream and return it to the residents.

Currently, only the uncovering work of the last covered section from Seoul National University Main Gate to Dongbang 1 Bridge in the upper stream of Dorimcheon remains.

A district official explained, “The district has continuously advocated to Seoul City for the ecological stream restoration project to preserve a clean and pleasant natural environment through the restoration and improvement of Dorimcheon into a natural stream. After long efforts by city and district council members to secure the budget, we have received a total of 33.1 billion KRW in city funds over three years starting from 2020.”

The district is accelerating the restoration project aiming for completion in December 2022 and plans to create waterfront spaces by establishing ▲ bicycle paths and walking trails ▲ planting aquatic plants ▲ installing nighttime lighting on bridges ▲ installing CCTV, providing various convenience facilities for residents.

With the completion of the ecological axis connecting Gwanaksan Mountain to the Han River through this restoration project, a walking trail along Dorimcheon to Gwanaksan will be connected, and it will be possible to ride a bicycle all the way to the Han River.

Also, upon reaching Gwanaksan along the walking trail, visitors will be able to experience various cultural spaces such as refreshing valleys, healing forest trails, outdoor botanical gardens, forest ecological experience centers, and adventure forests, fostering the establishment of a new tourism belt linked with Gwanaksan’s cultural and forest services.

To minimize inconvenience to residents with the commencement of full-scale construction, the district plans to establish a construction plan with the contractor and supervision team within February to ensure the project is completed promptly.

Mayor Park Jun-hee stated, “I am pleased that the day to return a natural stream where nature breathes to the residents is near,” and added, “Once the final restoration project is completed, we will assign a unique name to the Dorimcheon area to brand it and strive to develop it into a tourist attraction.”
