[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Kim Yeon-ju] Um Se-bum (19, Korea Land and Geospatial Informatix Corporation (LX)), who holds the Asian cycling record, died in a traffic accident during training in Thailand.


According to the Korea Cycling Federation on the 30th, Um Se-bum lost consciousness after being hit by a local vehicle while training solo at 10 a.m. (local time) on the 28th in Chiang Mai, Thailand, and died en route to the hospital by ambulance.


Meanwhile, Um Se-bum, who was about to graduate from Chungbuk Physical Education High School, joined LX on January 2 this year and was a promising cyclist taking his first step as a professional athlete.


Last October, he participated as a national representative in middle- and long-distance events at the Asian Junior Cycling Track Championships held in Korea and won two titles.


He won the gold medal in the team pursuit along with Choi Woo-rim, Park Young-gyun, Yoon Jae-bin, and Kim Jong-woo, setting a new Asian junior record by completing 4 km in 4 minutes 8.572 seconds during the qualifiers.


In the individual pursuit, he also set a new Asian junior record by finishing 3 km in 3 minutes 17.539 seconds in the finals, securing the championship.


He was scheduled to receive the 2019 Korea Cycling Federation Cycling Awards' Best Rookie in the Male High School Division on the 17th of next month.
