Candidate Yibong Lee Cancels Election Office Opening Ceremony Over Concerns of Wuhan Pneumonia Spread

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] Lee Yong-bin, the Democratic Party of Korea's preliminary candidate for Gwangsan-gu Gap, Gwangju Metropolitan City, announced on the 29th, "The health and safety of residents take precedence over the election," and stated, "The opening ceremony of the election office scheduled for the 1st of next month will be canceled."

Preliminary candidate Lee Yong-bin said, "The whole country is on high alert due to concerns over the spread of Wuhan pneumonia (novel coronavirus infection)," adding, "As a medical professional before being a politician, I intend to participate in the government's quarantine measures and avoid causing harm to supporters and residents."

He continued, "I will also temporarily return to being a doctor and support preventive activities by visiting areas where information dissemination is relatively weak."

He also said, "The government is currently implementing strong, swift, and even seemingly excessive preemptive measures very appropriately," and added, "We have significant experience overcoming the 2003 China-originated SARS outbreak with prompt responses, and we can also overcome this 'Wuhan pneumonia' well."

He further stated, "The public can prevent infection through thorough personal hygiene such as wearing masks and handwashing, and the government will implement even more meticulous and strong preemptive measures for prevention," concluding, "Through the process of overcoming this together, our quarantine and medical systems will become much more sophisticated."
