Gas Corporation Non-Regular Workers Union Strike Ends... "Intensive Labor-Management Talks on the 7th of Next Month"

[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bo-kyung] The strike by the irregular workers' union at Korea Gas Corporation ended after two days. The irregular workers' union had launched the strike on the previous day (28th) due to disagreements over the method of conversion to regular employment.

According to Korea Gas Corporation on the 29th, the strike was temporarily concluded as President Chae Hee-bong met directly with the irregular workers' union and reached a final agreement to hold an 'intensive consultation' involving members from each representative group on the 7th of next month.

The Gas Corporation plans to make efforts to ensure the conversion is carried out in accordance with the government's 'Public Sector Irregular Workers Regularization Guidelines.'

The company stated, "We plan to proceed with consultations considering laws and government guidelines, focusing on improving the treatment and employment stability of irregular workers to enhance the quality of public services."

They added, "We will do our best to prepare the optimal method for regular employment conversion by sufficiently consulting and gathering the opinions of stakeholders."

Meanwhile, Korea Gas Corporation and the irregular workers' union have held 21 rounds of labor-management consultations and meetings since November 2017 regarding the issue of direct employment but have yet to find a solution. The irregular workers' union has insisted on direct employment, while the company has advocated for conversion to regular employment through subsidiaries.
