Jeonnam Police Report 7.6% Decrease in Four Major Crimes, 46.2% Drop in Traffic Accidents, and 63.3% Reduction in Injuries During Lunar New Year Holiday

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Chunsu] The Jeonnam Provincial Police Agency announced on the 27th that during the eight-day "Lunar New Year Holiday Comprehensive Security Activities" conducted from the 20th to the 27th, the four major crimes decreased, no robbery incidents occurred, and peaceful and stable public safety was maintained without any major incidents or accidents.

As a result of comprehensive security activities and smooth traffic flow on the way to and from hometowns during this Lunar New Year holiday period, Jeonnam police reported that the occurrence of the four major crimes decreased from 627 cases (an average of 36.9 cases per day) in 2019 to 272 cases (an average of 34.0 cases per day) in 2020.

During the Lunar New Year holiday comprehensive security activity period, the Crime Prevention Diagnosis Team (CPO) focused on diagnosing and supplementing 3,467 vulnerable locations such as small financial institutions and convenience stores, while promoting crime prevention tips 4,910 times.

Along with the police mobile unit and the police reserve company (122 personnel), detectives (1,099 personnel), and cooperative organizations such as the autonomous crime prevention team (2,086 personnel), visible patrol activities were conducted in crime-prone areas. To strengthen the response capability to violent crime scenes, 24 joint functional actual training exercises (FTX) were conducted, including robbery reports at convenience stores and financial institutions.

Additionally, anticipating an increase in domestic violence reports during the holiday period, careful management was carried out by completing monitoring of 538 households at risk of recurrence before the holiday and 77 children at risk of abuse. As a result, 107 domestic violence reports were handled, a 10.1% decrease compared to 119 cases during the four-day Lunar New Year holiday period last year.

To fully support vehicle traffic, a total of 1,750 available personnel including traffic and local police, and mobile units, as well as 765 pieces of equipment, were deployed to ensure smooth traffic flow and traffic safety.

During the Lunar New Year holiday period, traffic volume for hometown visits and returns increased by an average of 7.7% per day compared to the previous year due to the shorter holiday and concentrated traffic volume.

In particular, traffic safety activities were strengthened by conducting traffic control duties in congested areas such as park cemeteries and major intersections, and accident prevention duties in areas with frequent traffic accidents. As a result, compared to last year, the number of traffic accidents decreased by 46.2% (from 78 to 42 cases), the number of injured decreased by 63.3% (from 169 to 62 people), and no fatal accidents occurred.

A representative of the Jeonnam Provincial Police Agency stated, "We will continue to increase contact with residents in cooperation with local communities beyond just the Lunar New Year holiday period, provide trust to the residents through visible activities such as patrols in vulnerable areas, and do our best to create a safer Jeonnam where socially vulnerable people are protected."
