Dongshin University Students Work Hard to Enhance Global Competence

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Students at Dongshin University (President Choi Il) are working hard during the winter vacation to enhance their global competencies by participating in language training and volunteer activities overseas.

According to Dongshin University on the 27th, the university's International Education Center selected 10 students and has been conducting the "Canada Overseas Language Training" program from the 13th of this month until the 9th of next month.

The students receive intensive language education at a Canadian government-approved educational institution for 4 hours daily, 5 days a week, over 4 weeks.

They improve practical English skills by staying in homestays with local Canadian residents or in dormitories of the language institutions.

The Canada language training program is designed for students with intermediate or higher English proficiency and is being offered for the second time following last year.

To maximize the effectiveness of the language training, the International Education Center conducted individual interviews before departure and assigned personal missions reflecting the students' majors and career paths, allowing them to simultaneously deepen their language skills and explore their fields of study.

Previously, from December 23 last year to the 19th of this year, 15 students selected through document screening and interviews participated in language training in Malaysia.

The Malaysia language training was a short-term intensive course for beginners, where supplementary learning was provided under the guidance of professional learning managers in addition to regular language classes.

The supplementary learning consisted of activities to develop listening, reading, speaking, and writing skills, as well as special classes preparing for the regular TOEIC exam.

From the 6th to the 12th, 21 students participated in overseas volunteer work in the Vung Tau area of Vietnam.

They engaged in activities such as making lucky pouches, kites, traditional Korean fans with folk paintings, traditional masks, and eraser stamps to introduce Korean traditional culture to local residents at Ba Ria Vung Tau University and other locations, and spent time communicating with locals by singing and learning K-POP dances together.

Beauty and Cosmetology students conducted programs teaching nail art and makeup techniques that are difficult for local residents to access.

Through these activities, students were able to assess their current language skills and gain confidence as global resources in the era of globalization.

Oh Seong-rok, director of Dongshin University’s International Education Center, said, “The language skills of students who have participated in overseas language training have improved remarkably, greatly contributing to their confidence enhancement. We will continue to offer substantial programs so that students can gain not only language skills but also confidence as global talents through various overseas training opportunities.”
