Google Data Center Lands in Korea... 'Three-Way Battle with AWS and MS'

[Asia Economy Reporter Buaeri] The launch of Google Cloud's Seoul data center (region) is reportedly imminent. As the third-largest player in the industry, Google is entering the domestic cloud service market following global cloud leaders Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft (MS), signaling the start of a three-way competition.

A Google representative said on the 27th, "We will soon be able to share news related to the data region," adding, "Only a few preparatory tasks remain."

Google Cloud officially announced the establishment of a domestic region last year. At the 'Google Cloud Next' event held in San Francisco in April last year, it was revealed that "a Google Cloud Platform (GCP) Seoul region will be set up and is scheduled to begin operations in early 2020."

Google sets up data centers in key locations for its cloud service business, categorizing them as 'regions.' In the Asia-Pacific area, Seoul is the eighth region following Mumbai, Singapore, Taiwan, and Tokyo, Japan.

The reason global IT companies enter the Korean market is interpreted as the growth potential of the cloud sector.

According to Google Cloud, the domestic public cloud market size is currently $1.5 billion (approximately 1.734 trillion KRW) and is expected to grow to $3.1 billion (approximately 3.5836 trillion KRW) in the future.

An industry insider said, "The establishment of the Seoul region means that global companies regard Korea as a very important market."
