China's 'Wuhan Pneumonia' Deaths Reach 80, Confirmed Cases 2,744... Spring Festival Holiday Extended [Image source=Yonhap News]


The number of deaths from the novel coronavirus 'Wuhan pneumonia' is rapidly increasing in China. As of midnight on the 27th, the National Health Commission of China (NHC) announced that eighty people have died from this disease across 30 provinces as well as Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan. This is an increase of twenty-four from the previous day. It is the first time that more than twenty deaths have occurred in a single day.


The confirmed cases of Wuhan pneumonia in China have been counted at 2,744, an increase of 796 from the previous day. Notably, a 9-month-old infant in Beijing contracted Wuhan pneumonia. Among the five newly infected patients, four were confirmed to be in their 30s to 40s.


The number of suspected Wuhan pneumonia cases in China is 5,794. The number of severe cases has also significantly increased to 461. The number of patients discharged after recovery remains stable at fifty-one. So far, 32,799 people who had close contact with confirmed patients have been identified. Among them, 30,453 are under medical observation.

The State Council of China announced that due to the rapid spread of Wuhan pneumonia, the Spring Festival (Chunje, the Chinese New Year) holiday will be extended from the 30th of this month to the 2nd of next month. Additionally, measures have been taken to postpone the start of the semester for universities, elementary, middle, and high schools, as well as kindergartens nationwide.


In the Greater China region, Hong Kong announced three new confirmed cases on the same day. Macau and Taiwan also reported increases of three and one cases, respectively. The global spread continues with two additional confirmed cases reported in Los Angeles County and Arizona in the United States. Currently, confirmed cases of Wuhan pneumonia overseas include ▲eight in Thailand ▲five in the United States ▲four each in Japan, Singapore, Australia, and Malaysia ▲and three in Korea.
