Esper US Defense, "Closely Monitoring North Korea's Long-Range Missiles"

[Asia Economy New York=Correspondent Baek Jong-min] Mark Esper, U.S. Secretary of Defense, stated that he is closely monitoring North Korea's attempt to develop long-range ballistic missiles.

On the 24th (local time), Esper attended an event hosted by the U.S. think tank Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) and, when asked about the threat of North Korea's 'new strategic weapons,' said, "They (North Korea) have aggressive research and development (R&D) and testing programs, and we have been monitoring them very carefully and closely."

He added, "They are attempting to develop long-range ballistic missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads," while also reaffirming the principle of diplomatic negotiations to resolve the North Korean nuclear issue by stating, "The best path forward is through political agreement," and repeatedly urged North Korea to return to the negotiating table.
