[Asia Economy Reporter Wondara] Former Prime Minister Lee Nak-yeon will visit traditional markets in Jongno-gu on the first day of the Lunar New Year holiday to meet citizens. This is his first official event since declaring his candidacy for Jongno.
On the afternoon of the 24th, Lee plans to visit Changsin Alley Market and Tongin Market for about two hours to meet merchants and citizens. At a press conference the previous day, Lee stated, "While fully complying with election laws, I intend to visit somewhere in Jongno tomorrow to offer Lunar New Year greetings." During this visit, he will also listen to merchants' opinions on revitalizing traditional markets.
Lee's actions have drawn significant attention to the 'Jongno Big Match.' However, Hwang Kyo-ahn, leader of the Liberty Korea Party, who was rumored to run for Jongno, has yet to make any statement. Regarding Hwang, Lee said, "I think it is inappropriate to comment on the decisions of the opposing party," but added, "Personally, I hope for a gentlemanly competition."
Meanwhile, Lee, who has also taken on the role of co-chairman of the Democratic Party's joint election countermeasures committee, plans to continue his communication with religious communities. So far, he has met with leaders of Protestantism, Cheondogyo, Confucianism, Buddhism, and Won Buddhism to hear their views on politics and society. After the Lunar New Year, he plans to continue meetings with leaders of Catholicism and Protestantism.
