[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] South Korea's Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) has risen to its highest level in nine years, ranking 39th, the highest ever, the 23rd reported.
According to the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission, South Korea scored 59 out of 100 in last year's CPI by Transparency International (TI), ranking 39th out of 180 countries, setting a new record high in just one year.
The evaluation score increased by 2 points compared to the previous year, and the country ranking rose by 6 steps.
South Korea's CPI ranking was 52nd in 2016 before the Moon Jae-in administration took office, 51st in 2017 after the Moon Jae-in administration took office, 45th in 2018, and 39th in 2019. It re-entered the top 30 for the first time in nine years since 2010 when it was ranked 39th.
The CPI is one of the three major government innovation indicators of the Moon Jae-in administration and is a representative index that evaluates the level of corruption in the public and political sectors by country.
The Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission analyzed that ▲ the promotion of anti-corruption policies at the national level ▲ the creation of a culture of integrity and fairness ▲ the enactment of the Public Finance Recovery Act and strengthening of the national subsidy management system ▲ improvement of abusive practices in the public and private sectors ▲ comprehensive anti-corruption reform efforts by the government and private sector had a positive impact.
The Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission plans to enter the top 20 clean advanced countries in the world by 2022.
Chairperson Park Eun-jung of the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission said, "Considering South Korea's international status, there is still room for improvement," and added, "To continuously improve national integrity, as the comprehensive anti-corruption organization, we will do our best to spread a culture of integrity and fairness throughout society together with related ministries and the public."
