[Asia Economy Reporter Koo Eun-mo] Ahead of the Seollal holiday, one of the surviving Japanese military comfort women victims has passed away. This reduces the number of registered survivors to 19 out of 240 victims registered with the government.


The Justice and Memory Foundation for the Resolution of the Japanese Military Sexual Slavery Issue (Jeonguiyeon) announced on the 23rd that victim A, a Japanese military comfort woman residing in Changwon, Gyeongnam, has passed away.


Lee Jung-ok, Minister of Gender Equality and Family, said on the same day, "It is heartbreaking that one of the Japanese military comfort women victims has left us ahead of Seollal, a national holiday," adding, "We will do our best to support the funeral of the late grandmother and pay proper respects on her final journey."


She continued, "The Ministry of Gender Equality and Family will continue to strengthen policy support so that the surviving Japanese military comfort women victims can live healthy and comfortable lives in their old age, and will actively promote projects to restore the honor and dignity of the victims."


The Ministry of Gender Equality and Family explained that the personal information of the comfort woman victim who passed away will remain confidential at the request of the bereaved family.
