[Asia Economy Reporter Han Seung-gon] As the death toll from the novel coronavirus causing 'Wuhan pneumonia' rapidly rises to 17, citizens covering their entire faces with large masks have appeared across China.
Recently, a photo was posted on social networks (SNS) showing a middle-aged man covering his entire face with a blue mask. In the released photo, the mask worn by this man extends long from his eyebrows down to below his neck. There are two small holes in the eye area, allowing him to see through them.
Considering the seriousness of the Wuhan pneumonia situation, it is presumed that many other Chinese citizens are also wearing masks like the one worn by the middle-aged man.
The Hubei provincial government, where Wuhan city is located, held a press conference last night (22nd) and announced that the confirmed cases of Wuhan pneumonia in Hubei have increased to 444, with 17 deaths among them.

Accordingly, it is estimated that the total confirmed cases of Wuhan pneumonia across China exceed at least 540. As the pneumonia spreads, Wuhan city announced that starting yesterday, wearing masks in public places is mandatory.
According to the People's Daily of China, Wuhan city stated that if a person without a mask ignores warnings and enters public places, the relevant authorities will handle the matter according to the law.
Wuhan city is also conducting temperature checks on passengers in vehicles entering and leaving the city, and those with a fever are immediately sent to designated hospitals for testing, making every effort to prevent the spread of pneumonia.
According to authorities, the novel coronavirus is presumed to have originated from wild animals that were slaughtered and sold at a market in Wuhan.
