[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Gyeonggi Province is promoting a support project for Hanok construction starting this year to widely publicize and spread our traditional architectural culture, Hanok.

The support covers 30% of the amount specified in each city and county ordinance. Earlier, to establish the basis for support, the province enacted and promulgated the "Ordinance on the Preservation and Promotion of Architectural Assets such as Hanok in Gyeonggi Province" in November 2018.

Applications can be made to the Hanok department of the city or county where the target site for Hanok construction is located. The respective city or county will finalize the recipients and amounts through deliberation by the city or county committee according to their own regulations.

This year, the province will carry out the support project with a total budget of 100 million KRW in regions where budgets have been established, such as Suwon, Gimpo, and Gwangju. Other cities and counties can receive support once their budgets are established. If there are many applicants, the project volume may be partially changed or adjusted to ensure fair distribution.

A provincial official stated, "Interest and willingness to reside in Hanok are increasing due to its unique beauty and dignity, but compared to general houses, the expensive construction and maintenance costs have limited the spread of Hanok. We hope this project will serve as a catalyst for promoting the dissemination of Hanok."
