[Asia Economy Reporter Heo Midam] Amid the decision to forcibly discharge Army Corporal Byeon Hee-soo (22), who underwent gender reassignment surgery during military service, former Dongyang University professor Jin Joong-kwon called to "allow the patriotism of transgender people."
On the 22nd, former professor Jin wrote on his Facebook, "Whether heterosexual, homosexual, asexual, or transgender, regardless of their sexual orientation or sexual identity, the loyalty that a member of the national community offers to the country should be encouraged and never prohibited," he stated.
He added, "What must be prohibited for the country is unjust discrimination against their patriotic will."
Corporal Byeon served as a tank operator in a unit in northern Gyeonggi Province and underwent gender reassignment surgery overseas using leave at the end of last year before returning. Afterwards, she also applied to the competent court for permission to correct her gender to female.
The Army held a discharge review board for Corporal Byeon on the same day and decided on her discharge. The Army explained, "According to the standards under the Military Personnel Act and related laws, this falls under reasons that prevent continued service." Byeon will become a civilian starting from the 24th due to the Army's discharge decision.
At a press conference held that day, Byeon said, "Since childhood, my dream was to become a soldier who protects this country and its people," and added, "If I am allowed to continue serving, I will be the only female soldier who has directly experienced living, sleeping, and sharing hardships alongside the warriors."
