[Asia Economy Reporter Cho Hyun-ui] As the first confirmed case of 'Wuhan pneumonia' has been reported in Korea, the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency announced on the 22nd that it will make every effort to respond to the community during the Lunar New Year holiday.
Earlier that morning, President Moon Jae-in instructed thorough quarantine and preventive measures in relation to the occurrence of the Wuhan pneumonia patient.
So far, among the 16 symptomatic individuals under investigation in Korea, one has been confirmed positive. Four are undergoing testing, and 11 have tested negative and have been released from isolation. The one confirmed patient is currently safely isolated and receiving treatment in a nationally designated inpatient treatment bed.
The KDCA anticipates an increase in symptom inquiries and emergency room visits centered around medical institutions during the Lunar New Year holiday, and considers strengthening infection control in medical institutions and thorough preparation important, discussing response plans with the medical community.
Specifically, guidelines related to emergency room patient response will be distributed, and overseas travel history will be checked during the initial screening process. They also plan to urge compliance with infection prevention rules among medical personnel.
A KDCA official emphasized, "Cooperation from the public and the medical community is above all important for early detection and blocking the spread."
