[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] Jeonbuk Province announced on the 22nd that it will support insurance premiums for fishermen's safety mutual aid to prepare for various safety accidents occurring during fishing activities, ensure stable fishing operations, and promote livelihood stability.
The insurance premium for the basic plan (general type) is about 100,000 KRW, but with a subsidy of 80,000 KRW, the burden on fishermen is about 20,000 KRW, which is very affordable, while the coverage level is quite high.
The fishermen's safety mutual aid insurance is a project that compensates for injuries, illnesses, disabilities, or death occurring during fishing work to promote the livelihood stability and social rehabilitation of fishermen and fishing workers.
The support targets fishermen and fishing workers aged 15 to 87 engaged in fishing (including salt farming workers), members of the Fisheries Cooperative, those who manage or engage in fishing for more than 60 days a year, and inland water vessel crew members.
The coverage includes maximum survivor benefits (100 million KRW), funeral expenses (1 million KRW), missing person benefits (10 million KRW), disability benefits (100 million KRW), hospitalization (work stoppage) benefits (20,000 KRW per day), accident disability nursing benefits, disease disability benefits, rehabilitation benefits, specific infectious disease diagnosis benefits, specific disease surgery benefits, and injury and disease treatment benefits (inpatient and outpatient medical expenses).
To apply, prepare required documents such as an ID card, cooperative membership certificate, license permit report certificate, or fishing village chief’s certificate, and consult and enroll at the Fisheries Cooperative insurance department in the relevant district. Insurance enrollment is possible after review by the National Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives.
Choi Jae-yong, Director of the Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries Food Bureau of Jeonbuk Province, said, “The fishermen's safety mutual aid project is designed with a high level of coverage compared to the low premium to promote fishermen's welfare. Since fishing is more exposed to risks than agriculture and has a higher possibility of various safety accidents, we hope that during this Lunar New Year holiday, children will show great interest in fishermen's safety mutual aid as a filial gift to their parents.”
