[Asia Economy Reporter Junho Hwang] The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) of Korea announced on the 22nd that it recently signed a partnership with Mila, a research institute located in Montreal, Canada.
Mila was established by Professor Yoshua Bengio, a world-leading scholar in artificial intelligence (AI) and deep learning, with the goal of developing "human-level AI." It is currently conducting joint research with Oxford University, Stanford University, Google, Microsoft, IBM, and others.
ETRI formed the partnership to advance AI technology and secure global competitiveness and core technologies. ETRI plans to dispatch researchers to Mila in the future to early secure next-generation AI technologies and apply research outcomes.
Additionally, ETRI has decided to participate in the global consortium "GARI," which Mila is promoting to overcome the limitations of deep learning technology.
Kim Myung-jun, President of ETRI, stated, "Through this partnership, we have created an opportunity for close research cooperation with advanced research institutions. We will strive to lead the AI field and enhance national competitiveness through continuous fundamental AI research."
Baek Ok-gi, Research Fellow at ETRI IDX Fundamental Technology Research Lab, also said, "We plan to expand the scope of existing AI research and focus on securing 'AI that thinks and adapts on its own.' We aim to develop our AI core technologies into technologies that surpass the limitations of existing AI."
