Gwangsan-gu Suwan-dong in Gwangju Selected as the 'No. 1 Safety Village'

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] Suwan-dong, Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City, has been selected as the 'No. 1 Safe Village.'

On the 21st, Gwangju Metropolitan City held a plaque unveiling ceremony for the 'No. 1 Safe Village' at the Suwan-dong Administrative Welfare Center in Gwangsan-gu, attended by Mayor Lee Yong-seop, Gwangsan-gu District Chief Kim Sam-ho, Gwangju City Council member Lee Jeong-hwan, Gwangsan-gu Council Vice Chairman Kim Eun-dan, Gwangsan-gu Council member Kim Tae-wan, Suwan-dong Citizen Safety Inspection Team leader, Suwan-dong Residents' Autonomy Association chairman, and about 100 residents of Suwan.

Additionally, Suwan-dong, selected as the 'No. 1 Safe Village,' was awarded a safety certification and a safety facility project fund of 10 million won.

Gwangju City has been promoting the selection of safe villages, safe schools, and safe companies for the first time last year to motivate citizens' voluntary participation in safety and to make Gwangju the safest city nationwide through the spread of safety awareness.

In particular, since February last year, a basic plan was established, and a task force (TF) team was formed, holding five meetings, conducting on-site investigations, and expert consultations to prepare evaluation indicators. In November, a public contest was held to finalize three places: safe village, safe school, and safe company.

For 'Safe Village,' Suwan-dong in Gwangsan-gu was selected; for 'Safe School,' Gwangju Seo Elementary School; and for 'Safe Company,' D.H. Global Co., Ltd. was chosen.

Suwan-dong in Gwangsan-gu, selected as the 'No. 1 Safe Village,' achieved the highest scores in three activity areas: safety infrastructure establishment, safety culture dissemination, and other special policies.

In particular, the self-governing organization 'Suwan-dong Citizen Safety Inspection Team' was launched, with all inspection team members obtaining safety certifications to enhance expertise. Continuous inspection activities through cooperation with related organizations contributed to the activation of the local community's safety culture, earning high marks.

Also, through big data analysis of traffic accidents, high-risk accident areas were identified, and 'Yellow Footprints' were installed according to risk ranking, contributing to the prevention of traffic accidents involving children on school routes, which was highly evaluated as a children's safety project.

Gwangju City plans to hold plaque unveiling ceremonies for the 'No. 1 Safe School' and 'No. 1 Safe Company' sequentially in February and March.

Furthermore, going forward, the city plans to select safe villages, safe schools, and safe companies annually, provide incentives, and hold plaque unveiling ceremonies for each safety certification to promote citizens' safety awareness.

Mayor Lee Yong-seop said, "Gwangju's dense safety network and citizens' awakened safety awareness are making Gwangju the 'safest city nationwide.' I hope the exemplary safety culture and awareness that started in Suwan-dong will spread throughout Gwangju and, ultimately, across the entire country."
