[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Dongjak-gu (Mayor Lee Chang-woo) announced on the 21st that following Soongsil University's selection last month as a target for the Seoul Metropolitan Government's comprehensive campus town development project, the project will commence next month.

The comprehensive campus town development project aims to promote win-win development among the local community, universities, and youth through initiatives for youth entrepreneurship jobs, culture, and regional cooperation.

With this project selection, the district will invest 10 billion KRW over four years to carry out ▲ the establishment of the ‘Soongsil Dongjak Startup Campus’ for IT convergence infrastructure ▲ entrepreneurship promotion projects focused on technology-based startups ▲ regional win-win programs to nurture future talents.

First, from February to 2023, the district plans to build the ‘Soongsil Dongjak Startup Campus’ adjacent to Soongsil University, consisting of four buildings including Living Lab A and B, and Factory Lab A and B, with a total floor area of 1,474㎡.

The startup campus will house a 3D Creation Studio equipped with 3D printers, scanners, and PCs, a PHOTO/UCC studio, and a SW Shared Equipment Center for software research and development, serving as an advanced base for innovative startups.

The SW Shared Equipment Center refers to a research institution established to improve research capabilities and secure competitiveness in basic science and technology fields through the operation and introduction of expensive research equipment.

By the end of this year, the district will implement entrepreneurship promotion projects such as ▲ practical investment academies for the general public ▲ startup support projects connecting experts from the pre-startup stage to product/service launch ▲ and the establishment of a startup networking platform for information sharing among supported companies by business sector.

Additionally, regional win-win programs will be operated, including the Dream Fruit Camp combining youth leadership and humanities, the Sangdo-Heukseok Cluster Startup Competition building networking between students and universities, and startup internship and recruitment fairs.

Park Beom-jin, Director of Strategic Projects, stated, “Through cooperation between the region and universities, we will build a ‘one-stop employment safety net’ for youth from education to employment and entrepreneurship, and promote projects to revitalize the local economy.”

Meanwhile, since 2018, the district has been promoting the Soongsil University unit-type campus town development project, completing the establishment of the startup ecosystem base center ‘Changui Kiwoom-gwan’ (487-7 Sangdo-dong) last month, and plans to remodel ‘Dojeon-suk’ (487-9 Sangdo-dong), a startup-residential complex space, this year.

Dojeon-suk is an abbreviation of ‘Dojeonhaneun Saramdeul Sukso’ meaning ‘Residence for Challengers,’ referring to rental housing that young people dreaming of entrepreneurship can use as living and office space.
