Governor Kim issued a statement on the 20th, saying, "Along with 2 million residents of Jeonnam Province, I welcome the retrial acquittal verdict for the civilian victims of the Yeosu-Suncheon 10·19 Incident."
Governor Kim emphasized, "For the pain of the bereaved families of the Yeosu and Suncheon 10·19 Incident to be somewhat alleviated through this acquittal verdict, the massacre by the state must be acknowledged and the truth must be revealed," adding, "The pain of the civilian victims and their families must be comforted and their honor restored."
He continued, "According to data from Jeonnam Province and the Ministry of National Defense, more than 10,000 local residents were sacrificed at that time," and urged, "The National Assembly should take this verdict as an opportunity for the ruling and opposition parties to join forces and enact a special law on the Yeosu-Suncheon Incident."
He further stated, "We will spare no support in comforting the bereaved families in the future," and added, "While maintaining the joint memorial service and related historic sites, we will carry out proper education for the public to correct history."
