[Asia Economy Reporter Naju-seok] The New York Times (NYT) editorial board has declared its support for Senators Ememi Klobuchar and Elizabeth Warren. Breaking with the tradition of endorsing only one candidate, the NYT announced support for two candidates.
On the 19th (local time), the NYT stated in an editorial, "Senators Klobuchar and Warren, both Democrats, possess the qualities to lead debates effectively," adding, "We hope the best woman wins."
Until now, the NYT has customarily endorsed only one candidate, but this time it endorsed two. Regarding this, the editorial explained, "In these dangerous times, we could not ignore both the radical and realistic models," and "For this reason, we broke the precedent of endorsing a single candidate."
About Senator Warren, the NYT described her as "a gifted storyteller and an excellent regulatory architect," and said, "We were deeply impressed by how well Warren's message resonates with the current era."
Regarding candidate Klobuchar, the editorial stated, "She has achieved outstanding results during her tenure in the Senate and has led valuable bipartisan agreements based on trust," adding, "She is a figure who can unite not only the Democratic Party but also the United States."
Upon hearing the NYT endorsement, Klobuchar expressed on Twitter that she was "honored." Candidate Warren said, "Klobuchar and I will not lose to each other not only in the election but also in earning the NYT endorsement."
The NYT has been announcing endorsements for presidential candidates since 1860. In the last presidential election, it endorsed Hillary Clinton, the Democratic nominee who lost to President Donald Trump.
The NYT editorial board stated that it has met with nine Democratic presidential primary candidates. It added that meetings with Republican Representative Tulsi Gabbard, former U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Julian Castro who ran as a Democratic candidate, and former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg did not take place.
