[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] Gwangju Metropolitan City announced on the 20th that it has been selected for the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy's pilot distribution project for 'Smart Gas Meters.'
This project was promoted by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy to distribute the next-generation meter, 'Smart Gas Meter (Gas AMI),' which allows gas meter readings without city gas inspectors visiting each household and enables city gas companies to detect gas leak information in real time.
As the city was selected as a pilot project site, it will prioritize distributing 2,500 units by the end of this year to single-person households (women and elderly) who requested privacy protection. Installation costs will be fully supported by national funds.
Once the smart gas meters are distributed, users will be able to access billing information such as real-time charges, estimated charges for the current month, past charges, as well as consumption patterns by time, day of the week, month, and season.
Gwangju expects that the various data generated here will greatly contribute to the 'Making Gwangju an AI-Centered City' project.
Additionally, the distribution of smart gas meters will resolve privacy invasion issues caused by recent visits for meter readings, improve the poor working conditions of meter readers, and significantly enhance safety against gas leaks.
Gwangju plans to proactively secure national funding based on the performance of this pilot project when the government's distribution project expands in the future.
Oh Dong-gyo, Director of the Energy Industry Division of the city, said, “Smart gas meters are expected to provide safety management and various conveniences to users and improve the poor working conditions of meter readers. The various data generated during operation will be utilized in convergence with artificial intelligence (AI) to help Gwangju stand tall as an AI-centered city.”
