[Asia Economy Reporter Bu Aeri] Facebook apologized for referring to Chinese President Xi Jinping, who visited Myanmar, as a 'Shithole.'
On the 18th (local time in Myanmar), Facebook acknowledged and apologized for issues in the English translation of President Xi's name on its Burmese service, according to AP News and others.
In a Burmese Facebook post announcing President Xi's visit and summit in Myanmar, his name was automatically translated into the English metaphor "Shithole," which refers to a very filthy place.
On the official Facebook account of State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, the English translations of posts announcing the meeting between President Xi and Suu Kyi included phrases like "Chinese President Mr. Shithole arrived at 4 PM" and "Chinese President Mr. Shithole signed the parliamentary guestbook."
Facebook issued a statement saying, "We sincerely apologize for the offense caused by this incident," and "we have fixed the issues with Burmese-English translation and are investigating the cause to prevent recurrence."
